Title: Nature’s Beauty
Author: [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted
Characters: Jack, Ianto.
Rating: G
Written For: Challenge 562: Common at [livejournal.com profile] tw100.
Spoilers: Nada.
Summary: Jack opens up a little about where he grew up.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.
A/N: Double drabble.

Sprawled on their blanket in the park following a very enjoyable picnic, Jack reached out to pluck a small flower from the grass.

“Have you ever really stopped to look at a common or garden daisy?”

“Not since I was a kid. Why?” Ianto said drowsily.

“They’re beautiful, and they deserve to be appreciated. Back on Boeshane there wasn’t much in the way of vegetation. Grass would flourish briefly after rainstorms, but soon turned dry and brown again, and flowers of any kind were rare. Most were tiny, insignificant things, barely visible, pollinated by the wind.”

“Your world doesn’t sound very colourful,”

“It wasn’t, mostly shades of brown apart from the blues of sky and sea. When I left Boeshane, and saw true flowers for the first time, in every colour imaginable, I thought they must be tremendously valuable; I couldn’t believe people could just go into a shop and buy as many as they wanted.” Jack smiled wryly at his lover. “Then I came to earth on one of my earliest assignments and there were flowers growing everywhere, but the people barely gave them a second glance.”

“Familiarity breeds contempt.”

“To me, every flower is a work of art.”

I imagine Jack's home planet in the same way!

(Am rewatching Torchwood - just finished 2nd series and I think it's really helping the plot bunnies and muses :) )
