“The most important quality required for anyone wishing to join Torchwood is an open mind,” Ianto informed the applicants, all of them hopeful of gaining employment with earth’s famous extraterrestrial affairs organisation.

“This is no place for anyone who harbours prejudices of any kind,” Jack added firmly.

“If you join us, you’ll be dealing with beings whose manners and customs bear no resemblance to any found on earth, and you will be expected to communicate on their terms. Make no mistake; most races visiting earth will, be vastly superior to us, technologically and often culturally. You’ll be required to adjust your attitude accordingly to avoid causing offence.”

“But what if they offend us?” one potential recruit asked.

“If you’re that easily offended you don’t belong with Torchwood,” Jack said sternly. “Are you going to take offence at a Gilgarran treating you like a child? Gilgarrans are among the oldest civilised races; almost everyone in the universe is a child compared to them, and like all children, we still have a lot to learn.”

“Can you handle kneeling to greet visitors, or having one speak to you only through their servant?” Ianto asked. “If not, leave now. Torchwood doesn’t need you.”
