Title: Weather Woes
Fandom: FAKE
Author:
badly_knitted
Characters: Dee, Ryo.
Rating: G
Setting: During the manga.
Summary: New York is in the middle of a drought.
Written Using: The tw100 prompt ‘Drought’.
Disclaimer: I don’t own FAKE, or the characters. They belong to the wonderful Sanami Matoh.
A/N: This one’s a triple drabble.
“Never thought I’d ever find myself wishin’ for rain,” Dee said, staring out the squad room window at clear blue skies and bright sunshine. The weather had been the same for almost a month; hot and dry.
The water level in Central Park’s reservoir and lakes was way down, fountains were turned off to conserve water, the municipal flower displays had already withered away to nothing through lack of water and across the city every normally verdant lawn and stretch of grass had turned dry and brown. One carelessly tossed aside cigarette butt could start a blaze the fire department would be hard-pressed to contain. Hell, these days a discarded beer bottle counted as a fire hazard. The cops of the NYPD were doing a kind of double duty, fighting crime and maintaining order while keeping their eyes open for anything that could start a fire. There’d been a few minor ones, but so far they’d caused no serious damage and nobody had been hurt. If the drought kept up for much longer though…
Ryo ambled over to join his partner, handing him a cold soda; in this heat drinking coffee was out of the question and water was in short supply. The refrigerator was stocked with soda and fruit juice for hydration purposes.
“Just a few months ago we were wishing for sunshine and warmer weather.” Leaning against the wall to one side of the window, Ryo opened his bottle of soda and took a drink.
“Exactly! Be careful what ya wish for; now we’ve got it we don’t want it.”
“And when it does eventually rain, we’ll probably start wishing it was sunny again.”
Dee grinned. “Well yeah, it’s human nature. No matter what weather we get, it’s always the wrong kind. Gotta have somethin’ to complain about.”
The End
