Fandom: BtVS
Author: [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted
Characters: Buffy, Giles.
Rating: G
Written For: Challenge 2: The King Must Die at drabblesoup.
Spoilers/Setting: Somewhere in Season Two.
Summary: Buffy is a little confused about what her mission is this time.
Disclaimer: I don’t own BtVS, or the characters. They belong to the wonderful Joss Whedon.

“The king must die, Buffy, otherwise his minions will keep on coming,” Giles said with impressive calm.

“Didn’t I do this already with the Master?”

“Completely different circumstances. We’re not talking about vampires but demons; they’re a very different kettle of fish.”

“So they’re fish demons?”

Giles shoved a hand through his hair, somewhat flustered. “Well, yes, I suppose they are in a manner of speaking, or perhaps more reptilian in nature, but that’s beside the point. The king controls them all, and will continue creating more servants until he himself is killed.”

“This king; does he wear a crown?”

This is Giles' fault in not being clear in his instructions; and that's based on what Sun Tzu would clarify is the job description of the commander of any operation: make your instructions clear to your subordinates and what they're to do in the tasks to fulfill the job of the unit.
Rupert Giles messed this one up, and that might make it clear to him too, as far as what's the job description of the boss in any task: to explain and train the employees to accomplish the jobs they're given, and assign them their jobs, and then cut them loose to fulfill their assigned tasks.
This reminds me of something I surmised to a former Air Force Captain I know quite well about current events in the war between good and evil in relatively recent years- regarding confusing orders, or seemingly confusing orders; and she's right to ask for clarification in that regard. Any boss at all who yells at a subordinate for asking questions requesting clarification of orders is being a horrible employer in general, but that's a different matter; here it's more like a "Slayer Dream" she's having, with the baffling instructions she's receiving.
For all we know in this; the aforementioned "king" could well be the First; perhaps better known as "Satan" for lack of a better term, but going up against *that* particular "metaphysical mafia don" is going to require true *supernatural* aid: the assistance of a God to take *that* thing down, all things considered- it's the greatest level threat to them imaginable; another reason I kind of like the story line of this series!
