Summary: Ryo suggests they all take part in a bird census.

A/N: Double drabble.




“Cornell University is running a countrywide bird census,” Ryo told Dee and Bikky as they sat round the table having dinner.


“How do the birds register?” Bikky wanted to know, having just recently seen Ryo filling in the census form online. “They can’t use computers.”


Ryo laughed. “It’s not quite the same as the national census, Biks. “What the university wants is to find out which of the rarest bird species people see where they live, and if there are a lot or just a few. I thought we could download the checklist and spend Saturday at Central Park. See what we can find there. I’ll pack a picnic lunch. Carol can come too.”


“A whole day just looking at birds?” Bikky said, not sounding too enthusiastic.


“I just thought it was something we could all do together.”


“Well okay, but can we take a ball with us?”


“If you want.”


The ball never came out of Bikky’s backpack; he was too busy scouring the trees and bushes with the binoculars Ryo had given him, and ticking off birds on his and Carol’s list. He’d never realised there were so many different kinds. Birdwatching was more fun than he’d expected.

Bird watching is addictive. I started with feeding the quail in the backyard and now I have four feeders.

I've been a birdwatcher all my life =)

I only have one feeder, but a wild garden which the birds love, lots of berries and no pesticides. Unfortunately next door has four cats, and there are several others who like to come into my garden to hunt, so I have to be careful. Plus the cats eat the food I put out for the birds. =/

We have four cats in our house but they do not go out so the feeders are all cat tv.

I would love a wild garden, but we really don't have much room and all of us have seasonal allergies. We do a lot of container gardening though.

The garden here is quite big for a suburban British house, far from enormous but a good size. It's a wild garden by default because my health isn't great, and as mum got older most of my effort wen t into looking after her. Now mum's gone and I'm trying to make progress outside, but my poor health and the weather re hampering me.

Container gardening is out here because of vine weevils. The grubs eat the roots of plants, especially those in containers, and they're proving impossible to eradicate.

I bet your cats spend a lot of time staring out the window!

We have two cat trees that are in front of the sliding glass doors and they all take turns just staring out and watching the birds.

That sucks about the weevils. I can see where it would make container gardening a no go.

Good luck on taming your garden. I hope both the weather and your health are more cooperative.

I can just picture them, lol! Like TV for cats =D

They have made things difficult. I used to grow and sell plants, but I had to stop.

Thanks. Health is not helping, and it's gone from too hot to too wet for gardening lately, unfortunately. The brambles I cut don are now growing back. =/

We've had rain and heat so the weeds are growing like crazy while my potted plants are dying from the heat.

That's how it goes sometimes. We had such a heatwave nothing outside was growing, then we got rain and now everything is!

I used to do that kind of thing as a member of the RSPB. Me and my dad, trekking around as many places as possible, seeing how many different birds we could spot.
