When Happy Birthdays Turn Less Happy
Feb. 19th, 2011 10:22 pmI've had a pretty good Birthday, despite having chores to do - lots of cards and good wishes, TWO Birthday cakes (both delicious), flowers and presents.
So I was enjoying my day until I went to clean out my guinea pigs this evening and found one of then had died. Their house is in the living room with us and they were both alive when I went to do the washing up, but when I came back, Crumpet was dead. They are both quite old and haven't been their usual selves the last few days, but it's still a shock and very sad.
On a brighter note, thanks to all my wonderful friends for their birthday greetings, to
I love you all! No matter how I'm feeling, you're always there to cheer me up and make me feel better. *Hugs*

Date: 2011-02-19 11:28 pm (UTC)Thanks so much for the birthday wishes, and the commiserations. Poor Gingernut is all on her own now, so she has no one to snuggle up with. It's always so hard to lose a pet, guinea pigs are as much part of a family as a cat or dog would be, so we're both upset, but she went very peacefully and had enjoyed her first dandelion leaves of the year earlier, so I like to think she died content at least.

Date: 2011-02-19 11:58 pm (UTC)The cake is wonderful! Collin and I both had a slice (the strawberry gateau he bought me was still frozen, so I cut the one you sent me instead!), mum has a cough and no appetite, but did sample a 1 centimetre cube and said it was very tasty. I'll have another slice tomorrow =)
I tried to cut Collin a slice of gateau before he left, but the knife went 'clink' against a strawberry and we both started laughing! I managed to cut myself a slice later and left it to thaw while I had dinner. It was still cold, but very nice.
I love the card you sent too, it's so cute! So, apart from Crumpet (and having to dismantle and shift my bed), it's been quite a good birthday!

Date: 2011-02-20 12:23 am (UTC)We're very sad about Crumpet, she was a much loved part of the family. Her sister Gingernut is alone now and looking very sad too. It's always sad to lose pets, no matter what they are.

Date: 2011-02-20 02:16 am (UTC)Losing Crumpet is very sad though. We've had a lot of guinea pigs over the years, and each one has been a unique individual, Crumpet was no exception. She'd developed a cataract, making her blind in one eye, but it never bothered her. She was pushy and never content with her own food, always had to try to steal Gingernut's. But there's no doubt they loved each other, they's spend ages grooming each other and slept snuggled up side by side at night - when they slept! Sleeping right beside their house for 2 months, I can confirm they do not sleep through the night. They squabbled and squeaked and tore up newspaper half the night. Ginger is very quiet tonight, I'm sure she'll miss her sister.

Love you, too, pet!

Date: 2011-02-20 11:39 am (UTC)Gingernut is taking it hard, she doesn't seem interested in anything, so now we're worried about her too =(
