Double Drabble: After Dark

Summary: Gwen doesn’t like solo retrievals after dark.

A/N: This one’s a double drabble.




The worst thing about Rift retrievals after dark was all the wildlife that only came out at night, and Gwen didn’t mean the Weevils. Bad enough having to poke around filthy alleys in daylight, startling the occasional stray cat, but by night the cats were joined by rats and mice, and just last week a fox had nearly scared the life out of her.


If anything, the parks were even worse, with bats flittering around her head, the eerie hoots of owls, and only her torch to light her way. At least when she’d been a PC she’d always had her partner with her; no one had ever been expected to patrol alone. Torchwood was stretched thin at the moment though, which meant solo retrievals were becoming the norm rather than the exception.


Creeping among the trees, she told herself she’d give it another ten minutes and if she still hadn’t found what had come through, she’d call it a day and come back in the morning, when there was enough light to see by. She wasn’t cut out for nocturnal adventures, didn’t have good night vision. Anything could be lurking in the shadows.


Maybe she should eat more carrots.

It sounds hard to retrieve something you can't see, let alone something that is possibly dangerous.

I forgot if Gwen had the skill set to manage being in a situation like this. Oh wait, she has her gun.

She'd likely shoot someone's dog, or the person walking their job. She should be relying on her scanner rather than her eyes. If she goes back without whatever it is, either Jack or Ianto will wind up going instead.

I always thought she looked more like a streetwalker in all that leather. Totally impractical for the job. Gwen thought too much of herself in all respects.

Well, she couldn't handle a corner herself that's for sure. I always thought that the chances of her being able to successfully flirt with any guy she wanted was miraculous.

She use some of that "charm" in the last series in case you didn't know.

I figured as much. I guess most guys were focused on her cleavage anyway. She wasted no opportunity to show that off, and we know guys think with their other brains more often than the one in their heads.

Some guys can't help but stare. Apparently there is some scientific reason behind it. Not that I really care for that excuse.

For me, its my legs even if I'm wearing pants. I'm a tom boy so I dress semi-casual or formal. In other words conservative.

Guys can still imagine your body shape if they want. I only found this out.

My legs are my worst feature anyway, they're awful. Any guy imagining them would be sorely disappointed by the reality. *laughs*

My nose is big but I think I would look more weird with a smaller one.:)

I've had comments like, You've grown from the last time I saw you" or "Your...tall".:D

I'm no supermodel but then beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I try for a model job when I was younger. This was before braces were cool on models. So that was probably why I didn't get it. But I wouldn't have lasted anyway due to my lack of confidence. No big deal.

Looking back, I wish I had tried out for things like broadcasting or became a DJ.:)

Don't worry. I just get a tad annoyed when I have nasal issues which can vary from time to time.

My big nose is part of being from a multicultural background. My grandfather on my mums side had a big nose. But people think I get it from my dad which annoys me. I know it is silly to think that way.

Nasal issues are annoying no matter what kind of nose you have; I think that's a universal thing.

But you tried, which is more than I would ever have had the nerve for.

Broadcasting sounds like an interesting field, but some jobs the working hours are just ridiculous - newsreaders and weather people have to get up in the middle of the night to get to work insanely early, for instance. I suppose there are good and bad points to most jobs though.

I thought that if my nose was bigger than the sir would pass through better. A block nose is annoying.:)

I just want to improve my voice to sound more confident.

Blocked noses are more about what's going on behind them that the nose itself though.

You should be able to train your voice, teach yourself to present a confident attitude. I'm sure you can do it.

I think confidence comes from being more knowledgeable about all sorts of things. As well as people skills.

It always comes from being comfortable with who you are. I never was a child, but I'm better than I used to be.

I have ongoing nasal problems anyway, a lifelong thing.
