Double Drabble: Question

Summary: Gwen has a question for the team.

“So,” said Gwen as the team sat around the boardroom table, eating takeaway, “what do you lot like doing on weekends? Any hobbies?” She’d been racking her brains for questions she could ask in order to get to know her new colleagues, and that one seemed about the safest.


Everyone stared at her and Owen let out a disparaging snort. “Weekends? We’re here, workin’, just like every other day of the week. Torchwood isn’t some cushy nine-to-five job with weekends and bank holidays off. It’s twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year. We’re lucky to get one day off a month. Who’s got time for hobbies?”


“Owen’s right,” Jack agreed. “The Rift doesn’t operate to a set schedule, so we have to be ready to deal with whatever comes through at any time, day or night. That’s why phones have to be kept charged and turned on at all times. I handle most nighttime alerts myself, but you never know when I might have to call the team in to assist.


Gwen was floored; all she could manage to say was, “Oh.” She ducked her head, concentrating on lunch. What had she got herself into?

Well, to be fair they all DID have hobbies, they just didn't confine them to the weekends.

Owen's is drinking and shagging; Jack's is standing on rooftops and swishing his coat; Ianto's is looking after the cyber-girlfriend; and Tosh's just happens to be the same as her work so she can do it any time.

*laughs* Ianto also likes to make coffee and file things, and Jack likes flirting with anything that moves,and some things that don't... They have lots of workplace hobbies.

I think Gwen was ill-prepared for a lot of things. Her previous job wouldn't have been standard business hours either.

But at least it had more or less regular shifts, unlike Torchwood. She was useless as a PC anyway, behaved like an idiot and probably would have been fired before long.

Yeah. Jack waited so long to find someone ideal for Torchwood and she was it?!

The problem was that she lack the skill set necessary, let alone the potential.

He saw her as a convenient replacement for Suzie and made a snap decision to hire her because she broke the Retcon. He really should have done some investigation into whether she was capable of doing the job. She just wasn't

I guess Jack couldn't just put her on a trial period and Gwen needed more than gun training to be equipped for the job. Jack also encouraged her to maintain a "normal" life which she couldn't really do.

She didn't rally try to maintain a normal life, just kept lying to Rhys for no reason. All she ever had to do was say her work was top secret so she couldn't talk about it. Instead she lied to him every chance she got, cheated on him with Owen, and kept throwing herself at Jack, who kept pushing her back at Rhys. Grrr!

Rhys could have done better. I wish that he hadn't been left in the dark about her cheating. Gwen having an affair with Owen was so random.

Rhys deserved someone who would respect him instead of treating him like a convenience. Wouldn't surprise me if thee had been other affairs. She didn't even particularly LIKE Owen.

Gwen actually cried when she realised that Owen was upset about Diane leaving him. I mean, what did she expect was going to happen? Rhys may not have known about Owen, but Owen knew about Rhys, right?

Of course Owen knew about Rhys. I think he only bedded Gwen to prove her happy relationship wasn't so happy. He didn't love Gwen, just wanted to show her for what she is. A hypocrite.

Gwen didn't even know Owen had fallen for Diane. Stupid Gwen.

Owen like to go after confident women (Susie and later Martha once she became a qualified Doctor). I just wish he had stop short of sleeping with Gwen. Cheating on your partner is icky overall. At least Jack had standards.

Owen did like confident women, I agree. Gwen was just convenient and easy. I think he wanted to see if she would cheat on Rhys because she was forever going on about him and how much she loved him, shoving he 'happy relationship' down everyone else's throats, and it hit a nerve with Owen. He'd had a happy relationship and lost the woman he adored, and it rubbed him raw having Gwen constantly reminding him of all he'd lost so he set out to wreck Gwen's happiness. I'm not saying I approve, cheating is wrong, but Gwen could have said no. She didn't.

It was stupid. One moment Gwen gets offended by Owens slightly sexist remarks, the next she has an affair with him because she has "no one to talk to" since Torchwood is so top secret?

Indeed I do, Gwen at hr hypocritical worst. She works with four other people, why does she have to sleep with one of them just to have someone to talk to? Gwen is justifying doing what she wanted to do by using weak and flimsy excuses that make no sense.

I guess Jack advising Gwen to see a counsellor or just talk to him at least wouldn't have made for good entertainment in RTD's eyes.*eye roll*

She could have talked to Jack, or Tosh, or Ianto, of even Owen without sleeping with him, treated them like people and colleagues instead of inferiors.

Gwen was pretty bossy from the start. Who was in charge when Jack went "AWOL"?. Gwen!

A straight forward storyline like you suggested or Gwen having less of an attitude would have been seen as boring to RTD, I'm sure of that.

RTD was so in love with Gwen he wanted her to do everything and be better at it than anyone else.

I still refuse to accept that Gwen was really in charge while Jack was gone. The others just let he think she was so they could get on with doing their job.
