American Football - What's Happening?
Dec. 28th, 2010 07:06 pm
So, here I am, sitting here in Britain, completely out of the loop when it comes to this year's American Football season. We do get televised games over here (at least, I think we still do) but they're on so late, and with all the chaos caused by burst pipes, heating (or lack of) problems, etc. etc., I haven't been watching.
So, are there any fans out there who can tell me what's happening? Which teams are doing well, which aren't, I briefly heard something about Brett Favre having to miss a game for the first time in... well, I long ago lost count, but it's been quite a while.
Any news would be welcome!

Date: 2010-12-28 07:51 pm (UTC)My Chargers just lost a game to get booted out of the playoffs (this is first on the list cause despite living on the other side of the country, they're MY team. :) they're good at losing important games.
yep, Brett Favre was out of a game... heh, he busted up his shoulder. its cause he's an old has-been that shoulda been out of the game years ago. Theoretically (hopefully) this will be his last season. Also, the Viking's stadium (the Metrodome) collapsed due to snow... sad.
Um, playoff standings are as follows.
Philly - NFC East
Chicago - NFC North
Atlanta and New Orleans - NFC South
New England - AFC East (WOOT. this is my hometeam) they're doing effing amazingly. Brady is playing like he shoulda been all year.
Pittsburgh and Baltimore - AFC North (Baltimore is my Josh's team... also my second. :)
Kansas City - AFC West (sad ... they kicked out my Chargers.)
this is a rare year where each team has won at least 4 games... there's nobody undefeated at all. its actually kinda nice to see the league rounding out a bit. And there are teams this year (Cleveland, Cincinnati, St Louis..) who are doing rather well, when in past years they haven't been. Of course the dynamo's are still there (New England, Indy, New Orleans, etc...) but its becoming a skill game again. Quarterbacks have to be better because defense is becoming better... things like that. :)
If there's anything more specific you want, i can tell you. I'm kinda in love with football. Even though my Chargers are out.

Date: 2010-12-28 10:21 pm (UTC)Who's QB for the Bears these days? They were in the Superbowl 2 or 3 years ago and the QB then was very green, I wasn't overly impressed. Then again, I fell in love with the Bears when Jim McMahon was QB - he wasn't the best and he was prone to injury, but he was a great leader.
The divisions have changed - used to be East West and Central, so who's in which division these days? God, the AF gets switched to a different channel over here and put on in the early hours (yes, I prefer live games, but I can't stay up all night at my age!), and I think I've missed a couple years - I know I missed the Superbowl last year (well, earlier this year really), first year since it came to TV over here, but until a few years ago I was at least keeping track, even if I didn't watch the featured game every week. I feel quite guilty!

Date: 2010-12-28 10:29 pm (UTC)I'll PM you my address - if I don't forget again! Things are still chaotic here trying to sort, pack and send stuff to storage. God, you have no idea how much junk I have. I used to video all the American football we got over here in the 80s and early 90s - dug nearly 100 4-hour video tapes of NFL games out from under my bed! I'll have to throw them out (except for Superbowl XX!), just can't keep them. I'll never have time to watch them all again. I'm already having to throw out all my vintage American Football magazines, I just don't have space for a pile of magazines over 3 ft high! I'm keeping my Superbowl programmes though!

as for whos in which division... here's a site... also got the standings for the year. http://espn.go.com/nfl/standings
Last year's superbowl was amazing... New Orleans over the Colts.. (I hate the Colts like its my job too... stupid Peyton Manning) I got a great site that makes fun of him if you're interested. :) but yeah.... New Orleans kicked ass last year.

Date: 2010-12-29 11:16 am (UTC)I loathed Dallas Cowboys for quite a while solely because of Troy Aickman - please tell me he's retired!
Some players just strike a chord for me because of their talent. I loved Joe Montana of the 49ers and Steve Young who came after - and, of course, Jerry Rice! But also loved Tim Krumrie of the Bengals - I remember him breaking his leg during a superbowl - dreadful injury!
