Fic Of The Week - Week Sixty One
Feb. 25th, 2013 02:19 pmWelcome to the latest instalment of Fic of the Week.
Slight change of plans this week - I had a fic picked out, but that will now be next week's choice. For this week, my lovely friend
timelordshines challenged me to find something funny - not smutty, angsty or fluffy, just funny. I took that challenge, and it's a lot harder than you might think! One-shots? No problem. A completed, funny series (especially considering that I don't read my choices first) was much harder to come by and I'm still only guessing whether what I've found will fit the criteria, so don't shoot me if I'm wrong. Despite extensive searching, I found a grand total of two possibilities, and as they're both very short, you get two fics this week.
The first is A Few Quiet Drinks by
jadesfire . This one is a crossover with Terry Pratchett's Discworld (that practically guarantees it's funny, doesn't it?) 4 parts and an interlude, from way back in 2007, it's G rated, so that should mean it's smut-free.
Summary: Some bars have a very special type of regular customer.
First part is here Parts are linked.
The second fic is a 5 parter from ff.net: That's Why There's A Handle by cjh4ever .
Summary: Our heroes each have to open a locked door. Inspired by one of the outtakes on the second season DVD boxed set. All characters appear, reasonably equally though Owen managed to pop up more often than I'd planned.
Find it here
So, there you have 'em! Hope they make you laugh! Happy reading, everybody!

Date: 2013-02-26 12:18 am (UTC)Thank you! This is exactly what I needed :-)
Although it drove me crazy because I saw your post around 3pm but was so busy at work I couldn't read it.
When I eventually finished work I made myself late for gym by sitting in the car park reading the first two chapters of "that's why there's a handle".
Brilliant. :-)
Some parts were funnier than others, a couple slightly angsty but resolved at the end of the chapter and two chapters threatened to dissolve into smut but the scene faded to black before they got there...
Ianto's chapter had me laughing out loud because I could picture it so well, and gwen's had me cringing because I could totally picture myself behaving like that.
I will look forward to reading the other rec later in the week.
Now I know why you asked if I liked Discworld. To my shame I have to admit I've not read any, despite my best friend always having her nose in one of the books when we were at school. I'm sure I would like them if she did because we have very similar tastes, its just one of those things I never got around to though.

Date: 2013-02-26 12:36 am (UTC)I love Discworld though I have to say, the first two are not a good indication of the series, after that Terry seems to hit his stride and the books are packed with delightful characters. The Librarian and Death are my particular favourites, and Terry Pratchett has a wonderful way with descriptions. I'm looking forward to reading these crossovers as I've read several others (mostly Jack and Death) and they're always fun. Hope you enjoy. There's another series which I love and which makes me laugh, but there's a lot of smutty references so I didn't use that. I should probably rec it anyway.
