Title: Expecting The Unexpected

Summary: Ianto contemplates the sudden changes in his life.

A/N: I’ve finally managed something fluffy!

 

 

 

A new year and a new life; Ianto couldn’t get his head around how much had changed in the last few days.

 

First had come the New Year and with it, an unexpected question.

 

“Happy New Year, Ianto! Will you marry me?”

 

Then, just a few days later, had come an even more unexpected pronouncement.

 

“Ianto, I don’t know how to tell you this, but… I’m pregnant.”

 

Ianto glared at the tangle of yarn in his hands; he’d master this if it killed him. Unravelling the mess, he started casting on again.

 

How hard could it be to knit bootees?

Oh yes, he will teach himself to knit come hell or high water, because if Jack can get pregenant he's damn well doing to make some things for their baby!

Knitting's really quite easy once you get the basics worked out, but I had a similar problem to Ianto when I was trying to knit the first of many matinee coats for my sister's first baby. He'll get there once he gets to grip with the pattern!

It's no wonder Ianto's feeling a little shell-shocked.

However, he will master the knitting. He learned at his mother's knee, when someone is expecting a baby, knitting must be done! He doesn't trust Jack to knit so he's doing it himself.

Nope, the other stuff can wait for now, but the knitting needs to be started as soon as possible, it's an irresistible compulsion, Ianto needs to knit baby clothes!

Knitting is a great stress reliever once you get the hang of it, it's just the learning part that drives you crazy and Ianto's a fast learner, so he should be fine.

The baby will have plenty of clothes by the time it's born, enough for at least the first year. Once Ianto has taught himself ther will be no stopping him, because knitting is soothing and therapeutic and the designs are so cute, lol!

I wish I could knit. My Gran taught me when I was little, but that was a long time ago and I've forgotten :-( Maybe I should make a new years resolution to learn again.

I already failed at one new years resolution - to get to work on time. First day back and I was ten minutes late. Oops.(But I more than made up for it by staying an extra hour and a half afterwards)

Are you going to expand this into a big story or do lots of little ones as Jack's belly expands, Nosy gets nosier and Ianto loses his hair over them both????

Oh yes, re-learn knitting, it's very relaxing once you get the hang of it. I really should get back to the jumper I'm knitting, but I've got a lot of computer stuff going on at the moment - files that need sorting, Master Lists that need re-doing, cross-posting that I haven't done yet....

Poor Ianto, the moment Jack said he was pregnant, he suddenly had an overwhelming need to knit something. I suspect his mum got out the knitting needles every time she heard someone was expecting, so it's like a Pavlovian response. Pregnant? I have to knit! It's what happened to me when my sister announced she was pregnant. I was like "I'm going to be an auntie. Aunties knit (mine always used to), must buy yarn and patterns." I picked out what must have been the most complicated matinee coat pattern possible, bought the yarn and needles, cast on and then spent a lot of time unpicking until I finally understood the pattern, lol.

If you want to start knitting again, pick a pattern you really like and learn by trial and error. It'll motivate you to keep going much better than knitting a scarf of squares for a blanket and you'll have a real sense of achievement when it's done.

This was really just a one-off because I needed to write a fluffy drabble - the previous ones were a bit angsty.

That's not to say I won't pick up the idea again, it may make further drabble appearances depending on the prompts, or I might write some short one-shots, who knows? I have a pile of plot bunnies already clamouring for attention though, so I need to get them written first once I have the time. Unless the drabble prompts inspire more immediately, that is. I want to write 100 drabbles this year, so maybe I'll slip in a few unprompted drabbles to follow this storyline. Guess I'll just decide as I go.

Yes, I have read the knitting Jack series, and a number of fics where Ianto knits as well.

Knitting is easy once you learn the basics, at least I've always thought so. I did what Ianto has done - picked a complicated pattern and just kept trying until I got it right. After that, everything else seemed simple. I crochet a bit too, but I need to brush up on my skills. I find crochet patterns very hard to follow, they mostly seem to be in diagram form.

This sounds horribly like my mother's plan for my Christmas holidays. She can't work out how the double-ended needles work, apparently.

Ianto will master it, because he is good at everything. Because he's Ianto. (I realise this is circular logic, but you can do that with Ianto. Because he's Ianto.)

LOL! Yes, Ianto will prevail, just as I did with my first serious knitting - a matinee coat for my nephew. I picked an incredibly difficult pattern, considering I'd only done stocking stitch and ribbing before. Took me several attempts to figure it out, but I did it and didn't stop knitting for years!

I can use double ended needles, but I don't like them, they're mostly too short and I don't like knitting in the round if I can avoid it.

Ianto knows everything, and if he doesn't know he'll research and learn. I love your circular logic, it's so Ianto!

I've never actually used them, but it doesn't take a genius to work out how to use them. I don't get how she doesn't get it!

We're looking, like Ianto, at booties. My friend says she has too much of everything else, because everyone is suddenly knitting.

I think I still have a ton of bootees and other baby clothes in storage from when I used to knit for a baby clothes shop (it went out of business, but that had nothing to do with my kntting, lol). I got a bit addicted to making them, they're so cute and there are so many different designs.

It's good to know there are still mothers-to-be who want baby hand-knits - most people these days just want babygrows etc, I couldn't even GIVE my hand-kntteds away the las few years. Sad to see crafts going out of fashion because people find more convenient alternatives. There's something about handknits, they're more personal than all the machine-made stuff.

That's such a shame, because I agree with you. If I wasn't so completely tied up this year, I'd be knitting non-stop myself. There is something a lot more personal about a hand-made item than a shop-bought one.

In fact, I still have some of the clothes my grandmother and great-grandmother made for me. I'd part with them for this baby (since there isn't another on the horizon) if it's a girl, but my friend is dead-set against anything pink. Even if it is a girl.

I'm about as far from being a girly girl as you can get, but I love pink! I like to see guys dressed in pink, it's about time things moved on from blue for a boy and pink for a girl!

I don't seem to have time for knitting either - I blame the internet! I can read a book while knitting but reading online and knitting isn't anywhere near as easy. Sadly I haven't found a way to read fanfic and do cross stitch at the same time either. I need a second set of eyes and probably more hands too...

That's amazing, especially the ones made by your great-grandmother. Mine was long gone before I was born and I don't remember my grandmother either, I think I was only about 2 when she died.

I'm not a fan of this pink for girls thing - if nothing else, Ianto looks GREAT in pink, and he's definitely not a girl!

I was very lucky to have known my great-grandmother: she lived until she was ninety-six, and was a fantastic lady. She always smiled, always had something stashed in the kitchen for us.

I know what you mean about more eyes: I'd love a second set to be able to read and sew at the same time. I've done reading and knitting. In fact, I even used to take knitting to work, when I was in a call centre - knitting, reading and carrying on a conversation. Drove my boss nuts (shame ;) ).

Men don't understand multi-tasking ;)

The only sewing I'm any good at is cross stitch, I was useless in my sewing classes at school. Mum used to make clothes for me and my sister, I guess the skill didn't get passed down, lol!

My mum was the youngest of 6 and didn't have me until she was in her early thirties, so I missed out on knowing her parents and granparents. I've seen pictures of her gran though, a very austere looking woman who apparently never left her room.

Me, my mum and my grandma are all the oldest children, so it's a bit different for us. It makes me sad that there are cousins being born who will never meet our awesome great-gran.

I've never tried my hand at making clothes. My mum used to do it when I was little (and she had time, somehow), but the sewing machine died so I never learned myself. I can hem things, and do buttons, but that's about it. Cross-stitch is something I'm quite good at, but it takes a lot of time and patience that at the moment I don't have. I'm not even sure where I've found the time to write, tbh.

That's the problem: All the things I like doing take a lot of time and are incompatible with multi-tasking.

I'm trying to find to write but even that's proving near impossible with life as it is since mum's stroke.

My cousin's two children were born after his mother died, so they never even got a chance to meet their grandmother. She so wanted grandchildren, but I guess fate had other ideas.
