You definitely hit this one out of the park and I totally agree with you. If Jack needed that closure from anyone, Alex would be the one. I always wondered what Alex could have seen to make him slaughter the whole team like that. Even if he knew Jack wouldn't die permanently, he still would have tried to find a way to kill him. And I've always felt that if our loved ones who took the Holy Road could come back, it would be those who were most important to us. (I have my own 'bucket list' of those people...)
