Summary: Ianto thinks about recent events.

A/N: Title used was ‘Tailgate’

Sitting on the SUV’s tailgate, mind whirling and body aching, Ianto was almost glad of the pain; it reminded him he was alive. He was surprised to be glad about that.

When Lisa died, he’d believed he had nothing left to live for. Now he was starting to think he’d been wrong about that, and a lot of other things too.

Jack wasn’t a monster after all, just a man dedicated to defending his team and humanity from alien threats.

Perhaps the real monsters were humans themselves, the ones who preyed on their own kind.

It was a sobering thought.

Sadly I agree with Ianto that humans at our worst are truly scary. I am blame it on the fact that we are not far removed from the days when we looked at the moon and threw rocks.

I live in hope that we'll grow up eventually - if we don't kill each other off first. I wish I could take a peek into the future and see if humanity does eventually turn out okay, but I'm scared of what I might see.

It's sad that it took something so horribly tragic to bring about Ianto's epiphany on being alive and who the real monsters in this world are, and that Jack is not one of them.

In a way, I think he needed to be shocked out of his apathy. He'd given up, but now he knows he wants to live and he'll fight to stay that way. Nevertheless, it's a horrible way to discover the depths of depravity humans are capable of; it'll take all the team a while to get over what they've seen
