Summary: Jack doesn’t fear falling. Or does he?

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: My second drabble for this challenge.

Jack loved high places; you could see forever if you were high enough. He had no fear of falling from them because really, what was the worst that could happen? He’d smash himself up, die and come back healed. Or mostly healed anyway. Sometimes he came back before everything was completely fixed, which could be unpleasant, but not to the extent that he feared it.

Besides, if the building was tall enough, falling was actually quite enjoyable, at least until he reached the ground. No, falling from a building was fine.

It was falling in love that he really feared.

It's knowing that he will outlive everyone he ever loves, they'll grow old and die while he never changes. Love can never mean a happily ever after for Jack, losing the ones he loves is inevitable and tears his heart apart every time. =(

Dying and coming back to life only hurts for a little while. The pain of a broken heart never really goes away and his heart will break over and over as he loses those he loves

It can be, especially whrn you know that you will inevitably end up with a broken heart when the one you love dies while you never change.

You make a very important point about Jack's nature, which many people tend to gloss over. I always wondered how he found the courage to keep loving people, knowing that inevitably he would lose them. It's hard enough to give your heart to a cat or dog you'll outlive: just imagine knowing that you'd end up mourning a person you love. My head canon is that his heart has sort of a reset button, so that every time he dies and comes back, his ability to love is restored.

I like that!

Jack is slow to give his heart most of the time, I think, out of fear of losing another loved one, but sometimes love sneaks up on you and you're in love before you can guard your heart. That's what happened in Ianto's case, I believe.

Thankfully, now I've made Ianto immortal, Jack won't have to lose him =)
