It was spring in New York, and in the park the trees were full of blossom, a riot of colors against the bright blue of the sky. Delicate petals fluttering in a gentle breeze that stirred the fresh green of the leaves, making them rustle softly. It was a glorious day, the kind that just made you feel good to be alive.

Ryo breathed deeply, inhaling the light fragrance of the Lilacs they were passing. He loved spring, when the weather was just warm enough without being too hot, the sweet scents of flowers filled the air, and there were bursts of color everywhere he looked, nature coming to life after its long winter sleep. He could hear birds singing in the branches overhead, and even the knowledge that he and his partner were approaching the scene of a brutal murder couldn’t dim his smile.

Beside him, Dee slouched along, grumbling under his breath before letting out another explosive sneeze. Ryo bit his lip to keep from laughing, because honestly, he shouldn’t find it funny. Poor Dee, he was really suffering; his eyes were red and watering, and he’d been sneezing since they’d arrived at the park.

“You’d better keep well back so you don’t sneeze over any evidence and contaminate it,” he teased.

Dee scowled balefully back at him. “See if I’m sympathetic the next time you’re the one sufferin’,” he snapped peevishly. “This isn’t my idea of fun.” He paused to sneeze again, digging for a tissue. “Pollen allergies are a bitch!”

“Can’t you take something for it?”

“I did. Trouble is, it’s gonna take time for the antihistamines to really kick in and until then I’m gonna be like this.” Dee wiped at his eyes and nose, shoving the tissue back in his pocket; he knew better than to contaminate the area around a crime scene by dropping it into a nearby bin. What if that was where the killer had ditched the murder weapon?

“I’m sorry.”

“Why? Not like it’s your fault. Why’d spring have to come early this year?” Other years, by the time the air started to fill with drifting pollen Dee would have already been taking his allergy medication for a couple of weeks, but winter had been unusually mild, and the trees had started blossoming a full three weeks ahead of schedule. All the sneezing was giving him a headache; he wished he could just go home and crawl into bed where he could suffer in peace. Unfortunately, he and Ryo had work to do.

They approached the taped off area and flashed their badges to the uniforms keeping curious onlookers at bay. The forensics people were already there, collecting, bagging, tagging, and photographing everything that could potentially be evidence.

“Brace yourselves,” said one of the uniformed officers. “It’s a bad one.” He looked a little pale.

“Yeah, so we heard.” Dee sneezed again and sighed. “Ryo, I’ll go talk to the guy who found the body, maybe see if anyone else might know anythin’ helpful. You’re right, I’m not gonna be any use at all if I’m sneezin’ all over everything. Sorry.”

“It’s okay, you can’t help it. I’ll see what the CSIs have found so far and scope out the scene.”

They headed in different directions; divide and conquer. Truthfully, they didn’t both need to see the scene; there’d be plenty of photos for them to work with later, the forensics experts were very thorough. Still, as ugly and unpleasant as the task generally was, seeing everything firsthand remained important. The trained human eye could sometimes catch things that didn’t show up in photographs, though the reverse was also possible, photographs picking up details that otherwise might have been overlooked.

As he’d been told, it was a grisly scene, the body of a young man beaten to death with a blunt instrument of some description. Definitely not a pretty sight, but Ryo had seen far worse. Mostly, it made him feel sad because it was such a beautiful day, and the victim was no longer in any position to enjoy it. He was angry too, because someone had robbed the victim of his future. Did he have a wife? Were there kids who would grow up without a father? Parents who’d have to face a future without a beloved son? He hoped not; people shouldn’t get that kind of news on a day like this, or on any other day either.

While Ryo was morosely studying the body, his good mood somewhat dampened, Dee rejoined him, the lower half of his face covered by a medical mask.

“What d’ya think of my new look?” Ryo could hear the smirk in Dee’s voice even though he couldn’t see it. “Got this stylin’ new accessory from the paramedics. They’re treatin’ the unlucky sod who found the body for shock.” He broke off to sneeze loudly. “Doesn’t stop the hay fever, but at least now I can’t contaminate anything. Maybe we can play Doctor later.” He winked lasciviously.

“Dee! Have some respect for the deceased.” Ryo glared at his partner.

“You’re right, sorry.”

Lowering his voice, Ryo added, “I’ll think about it, if you’ll just focus on the job for now.”

“Well, I’ll try, but you don’t make it easy. Every time you bend over wearin’ those pants, I get distracted.” Dee wandered away to give the crime scene a once-over for himself, leaving Ryo staring after him, flushed with embarrassment. At least there was no one else near enough to have overheard their exchange, or to see his blush.

Ryo busied himself with looking for evidence, taking care not to bend over with his back to Dee. The spring weather that had the birds nesting early was making his lover even friskier than usual.

Another sneeze came from Dee, now some distance away, and Ryo smiled wryly. On the other hand, his partner’s constant sneezing was putting him off his stride. Even kissing was proving difficult, and certain other acts were out of the question entirely since neither of them wanted to risk important parts of Ryo’s anatomy getting accidentally bitten off. Dee’s sneezes often hit without warning.

The sooner his lover’s allergy meds kicked in, the happier they’d both be.

The End
