Their winter vacation on a tropical island had been sheer bliss; hot, sunny days, blue skies, gentle breezes, white sands, and warm turquoise seas, but now Dee and Ryo were heading home to cold, snowclad New York. It wasn’t an appealing prospect, and there was a distinct pall of doom and gloom hanging over the two men as they relaxed in their seats, halfway through the return flight.
Ryo sighed. “I wonder what we’ll be coming home to. I hope we don’t get a new case dumped on us as soon as we walk through the door.”
“Don’t think about it; we’re still on vacation until tomorrow mornin’, and I don’t wanna hear about anything to do with work until then.”
“Ignoring it won’t make it go away, Dee.”
“It’s worked well enough for the last ten days.” Dee had placed a ban on anything work-related from the moment they’d boarded the plane on their outward journey.
“Fine, what d’you want to talk about then?”
“Maybe I don’t wanna talk at all,” Dee said with a smirk.
“That’ll make for a boring flight.”
“Doesn’t have to, there’s plenty to do that doesn’t involve talkin’.”
“Like what?”
Dee leaned across the armrest between their seats to whisper in Ryo’s ear. “Are ya ready for your initiation into the Mile High Club?”
Ryo’s eyes went wide, his face turning scarlet. “No way!” he hissed, glancing around to make sure nobody was listening in to their conversation. “I’m not… We’re not…” He floundered to a halt. “How can you even suggest that?”
“Why not? Practically everyone does it. Can you think of a better way to end our vacation on a high?”
“You’re insane!” Ryo buried his head in his hands. The worst part was knowing Dee would probably win in the end.
