Doctor Who Drabble: Family
Sep. 4th, 2021 06:23 pmTitle: Family
Author:
badly_knitted
Characters: Donna, Sylvia, Wilf.
Rating: G
Written For: Challenge 532: Grandfather at
dw100.
Spoilers: Nada.
Summary: Donna loves her grandfather more than anyone.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who, or the characters.
Donna loves her mum, really she does, even though there are times she doesn’t much like her. Sylvia criticises her daughter endlessly, puts her down, acts as though Donna is a huge disappointment to her, and that hurts, but it’s just the way her mum is so Donna tries not to take it to heart. Some people don’t know how to be happy.
Her grandfather is completely different, always supportive, caring, encouraging, telling her she can do and be anything she chooses, and Donna believes him. She loves him more than anyone. Maybe her mother is jealous of their closeness.

Date: 2021-09-05 12:24 am (UTC)It's a possibility. We didn't get much background on Sylvia. Besides the stereotypical.

Date: 2021-09-06 12:21 pm (UTC)It depends on the dynamic. Sometimes Rose and Jackie were more like friends or sisters. That is, whenever Jackie wasn't in protective mother mode.
Martha was independent, but her family seemed to lean on her for emotional support.
It seems Donna got on better with her father and Wilf the most.

Date: 2021-09-07 09:22 am (UTC)Sylvia Noble: She still is. She's my daughter.
Tenth Doctor: Then maybe you should tell her that once in a while.
It took saving the universe for Sylvia to see that Donna had value and not everything was her fault. So to speak.
Wilf was always encouraging. Sometimes he'd make it known in front of Sylvia.

Date: 2021-09-08 11:46 am (UTC)Yeah. There was something lacking in her parenting skills. Which are most likely the result of her own insecurities.

Date: 2021-09-09 12:08 pm (UTC)Tenth Doctor: Can't get it open!
Donna: Well, smash it then!
(She finds a spanner and starts hitting the glass)
Well, Donna had at least one thing in common with her mum. Which was being practical in emergency type scenarios.
Tenth Doctor: It won't open.
(Sylvia comes back out of the house with an axe, closes the bonnet and breaks the windscreen.)
It worked better in Sylvia's case but you get where I'm going with this.

The fact Sylvia didn't slap the Doctor was a relief and a surprise.

Date: 2021-09-11 09:50 am (UTC)Yeah. It was a continuation of sorts. I think slapping is a form of assault if you ask me. No matter what gender.
Although when Donna did it in "Runaway Bride", it was kind of her way of making Ten stop talking. Given the circumstances.
Overall, its a very fine line. My opinion.

Date: 2021-09-12 10:15 am (UTC)Exactly. I think the hurt goes both ways. My hand would hurt if I slapped someone. Which is why I like when characters show the repercussions of it. For example, when a guy shakes his hand in pain after punching someone.

Date: 2021-09-13 11:13 am (UTC)At least with Leela, the Fourth Doctor called her out on her violent behaviour. Although I'll excuse her slapping that hysterical lady in "Horror of Fang Rock". The next option would be to firmly get someone to calm down. But that wasn't Leela's style now was it?*shrugs*

Date: 2021-09-14 11:10 am (UTC)Jenny: We don't have a choice.
Tenth Doctor: We always have a choice.
True. And Jenny takes on that advice.
On the other hand...
Amy Pond: What kind of rubbish pirates are you?
I could picture Leela doing the sword fighting Amy did in "The Curse Of The Black Spot."
no subject
Date: 2021-09-14 05:35 pm (UTC)Amy was pretty handy with a sword, but the weapon would have been totally alien to Leela, she wouldn't have knoiwn how to use it. She was more a knife or possiblty spear girl.

Date: 2021-09-15 10:44 am (UTC)Yes. Brains over weaponry I suppose.
Rory: He was just a game. We were kids. You made me dress up as him.*talking to Amy about the Doctor*
I remember seeing the behind the scenes where Karen Gillian was training with the stunt men. Those swords are heavy, so in retrospect, Amy must have done more than the usual role-play stuff growing up.
I guess Leela would have found her own way of defending herself. She could be quite intimidating. She would have to be in the main outfit Louise Jameson had to wear. Eye candy for the Dads at home indeed.*sighs*

Date: 2021-09-16 07:34 am (UTC)Amy Pond: Is that a leather bikini?*seeing a pic of Leela on the TARDIS screen*
If it wasn't for Louise Jameson insisting on some more layers, she'd probably be in her underwear.
They did the same kind of thing with Peri Brown. Although eventually, Nicola Bryant was "allowed" to wear proper clothing.
Come to think of it, the male gaze was used with the First Romana. When she was introduced, from the legs up.
Series 10 of New Who was almost like the old series, where it was a mentor/student dynamic.
Thirteenth Doctor: These legs definitely used to be longer.*hanging off a crane.
The show has changed alot as far as I've heard.

Date: 2021-09-16 08:59 am (UTC)The trouble is, TV execs back then were mostly male and thought scantily clad women would increase viewer figures. But honestly, everywhere you look these days there are scantily clad women, and people don't even notice half the time, unless they're prudish and find it offensive.

Date: 2021-09-16 11:45 am (UTC)True. It was meant to educate children about history and science. I didn't know that when I was a kid.
After they drop the eye candy stuff, budget cuts and lack of better scripts cancelled the old series. From what I can gather.
I think it's a given that female characters looks will be a subject matter. That or their sexual preferences. Although there's Jack, but that's a different story.*tries not to ramble*

Date: 2021-09-16 05:35 pm (UTC)Male character looks are a subject matter in many cases too. After all, TV shows want the girls to watch so they cast good looking men in most lead roles.
Jack is Jack, he can find something attractive in most people / aliens.

Date: 2021-09-18 11:00 am (UTC)If it didn't happen, we wouldn't have gotten New Who at all.
Jenkins: He's like a potato. A baked potato. A talking baked potato.
Tenth Doctor: Now, Ross, don't be rude. You look like a pink weasel to him.
Beauty is subjective. But generally athletic/model type people (bad choice of words) tend to be a crowd pleaser. Although charisma comes in many forms. So to speak.
Toshiko Sato : Exactly! I've watched him in action, he'll shag anything if it's gorgeous enough.
no subject
Date: 2021-09-18 06:05 pm (UTC)Yes, it takes all kinds to make a galaxy.
Of course, Jack's idea of what constitutes 'gorgeous' doesn't necessarily match anyone else's. He doesn't find aliens weird or ugly because he grew up in a time and place where aliens were just people, like anyone else, even if they loked different. It didn't matter.

Date: 2021-09-19 11:16 am (UTC)Yeah. The Eighth Doctor also didn't get as much screen time as I would hope for. Although I recently heard Paul McGann narrating a documentary. I didn't realise it was him until someone pointed it out in the YouTube comments. :D
MARTHA: We must be the only two people on the planet.
GWEN: I know. What are we doing wrong?
JACK: Oi, you talking about me?
Jack has to be the flirtiest one in the room. Usually if someone initiates it first or things get serious, he seems to be taken aback.

Date: 2021-09-19 12:51 pm (UTC)Donna Noble: Who is he?
Tenth Doctor: Captain Jack. And Don't. Just Don't.
People say Jack was standoffish at Donna for wanting a hug. But he saw the Doctor warn Donna off him already. :D

Date: 2021-09-20 11:19 am (UTC)True. It's not like Donna propositioned him.
Jackie Tyler: I’m… I’m in my dressing gown.
Ninth Doctor: Yes, you are.
Jackie Tyler: There’s a strange man in my bedroom.
Ninth Doctor: Yes, there is.
Jackie Tyler: Well, anything could happen.
Tenth Doctor: No.
I don't think the Doctor was being rude. Just honest. Although nothing wrong with women making a move. But that was pretty risky for having just met each other.
no subject
Date: 2021-09-20 07:08 pm (UTC)I loved how blunt Nine could be. He wasn't rude, he was just setting up boundaries.
no subject
Date: 2021-09-21 05:28 am (UTC)Tenth Doctor :... why is there an apple in my dressing gown?
Jackie Tyler : Oh, that's Howard's, sorry.
This exchange was quite neutral. But when Ten was being rude, he knew it.*shakes head*
Twelfth Doctor: Clara, I'm not your boyfriend.
Clara: I never thought you were.
Me: Really?*inner thoughts*
Twelfth Doctor: I never said it was your mistake.
That's Moffat addressing Eleven and Ten's attempts at "establishing boundaries". Besides Donna of course. She shut that down from the get go.

Date: 2021-09-22 11:51 am (UTC)JACKIE: There was never anyone else. Twenty years, though. Look at me. I never left that flat. Did nothing with myself.
PETE: You brought her up. Rose Tyler. That's not bad.
Well, no one serious anyway. It wasn't like we saw Howard onscreen to know his true character.

The apple makes more sense now.
