A/N: Double drabble.
Ryo drew in a deep breath, filling his lungs with oxygen and setting himself coughing again. He supposed there was a purpose to that, clearing the smoke from his lungs, but it was a damned nuisance. He wiped ineffectually at his eyes as they teared up, the oxygen mask the paramedics had given him getting in his way, but it was a small price to pay for the clean, smoke-free air he was breathing now.
A short distance away, Dee was being tended by another paramedic, and catching his lover’s eyes turned his way, Ryo gave him a thumbs up. Talking was out of the question, his throat felt too raw and he was so tired of coughing, but he could at least provide some reassurance that he was okay. He smiled behind the mask as he saw Dee nod slightly and return the gesture. Both of them would be fine.
Maybe it had been dumb to run into a burning building, but there’d been people trapped inside; they couldn’t just stand around and do nothing. They were cops, they’d promised to protect and serve, so they’d done what they could.
No fatalities: that made for a good day’s work.
