Ryo tossed and turned restlessly, throwing the covers off, then pulling them back over him. His normally comfy bed had lumps where it had never had lumps before, and the covers felt stifling but the room too cool for him to discard them.

There was nothing really wrong with the bed, or with the temperature of the bedroom, and he wasn’t sick, no fever to account for his inability to sleep. Everything was exactly as it always was, except for one significant difference; Dee wasn’t beside him.

He hated when he and his lover were assigned to different shifts. It hadn’t been so bad before they’d started living together, when they’d only slept over at each other’s place once or twice a week, but now nothing felt right when Dee was working the late shift. Ryo worried about his partner and felt like part of himself was missing.

As he turned over and closed his eyes, resigning himself to yet another lonely night, his phone rang on the nightstand and he picked it up.

“Hello?”

“Hey, babe. Missin’ me?”

“You know I am. The bed’s too lumpy without you. Be careful tonight.”

“Always. Love ya, babe. Sweet dreams.”

“Goodnight, Dee.”
