Ianto didn’t break his promises. If he said he’d do something then come hell or high water he would. He’d decided long ago that if a promise was worth making it was worth keeping, so when he’d promised Lisa he’d find a way to fix her, to get her back to how she’d been before Canary Wharf, or as nearly as possible, he’d meant every word.

But as time had passed it had become increasingly difficult to maintain her condition without further deterioration, and she was suffering so badly… Inevitably the doubts began to set in. What if he couldn’t find anyone with the necessary expertise? What if no such person existed? What if Lisa couldn’t hold on long enough to be healed? What if he made a mistake with the painkillers and sedatives he was giving her?

He was no doctor, and even if everything he researched was correct, Lisa was no ordinary patient. Strictly speaking, she was no longer entirely human. The metal implants were running most of her physiological processes, although the ones involving breathing were incomplete, leaving her dependent on the life-support machine he’d rigged up.

In trying to heal her, he could accidentally kill her.

The End
