This is an exceedingly well-written story you've got here, short, sadly, but exceedingly well-done... and, not only is she living on borrowed time, but so are we all come to think of it. None of us really know how long we've got to carry out our tasks in this life, or even to find out what said task is. In a sense, we're all, fictional and factual, living in the same colony settlement, with unknown tasks in settling this planet we're living on at that... to draw on things like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Babylon 5 for instance, as well as every single space colonization story out there, as well as this fantasy world she lives in in the story.
