It didn’t matter to Mother that she hadn’t given birth to any of them; the children she cared for were hers for as long as they lived under the roof she provided.

She did the best she could for them, no matter what that meant; making sure they were fed and clothed, tucking them into bed at night, patching up skinned knees, finding new families for them… The children’s needs came first with her, always, even though letting them go was always a wrench. A proper family, with parents who could give them all their attention, would always be better for an orphaned child than being one of many, vying for her attention.

Nevertheless, Maria Lane lavished love on the children in her care, doing her best to make each and every one of them know how special they were, and they loved her too, even though she was strict. Children needed boundaries and discipline as well as love.

Becoming a nun, she’d felt she was following her true vocation; she’d never had second thoughts, but above even that, she knew being a Mother was what she was made for. There’d always be room in her heart for another child.
