Nice weather if you're a duck!
Jul. 23rd, 2013 01:05 pmOh Lord, what a day! Thunderstorms, torrential rain and I had to take Misty to the vet for his check up.
Wasn't too bad setting out. The rain was pouring by then, but I already had the garage and the drive gates open so I only had to dash through the rain for a minute. By the time I pulled out of the garage though, the rain was so heavy visibility wasn't too good, so I was driving pretty slowly and thankfully all the other drivers seemed to be taking more care than usual too. Just as well - one of the roads I have to use dips down and then up again and it's completely flooded for about 15 feet, under at least 6 inches of water. Really don't want to go through that too fast!
Thankfully, by the time I reached the vet the rain was easing up so I didn't get too wet making a dash for the waiting room. Which was packed with dogs. Felt like it anyway! One huge Husky, one chocolate Labrador and a Bull Terrier that really wanted my rabbit and nearly pulled its owner off his chair three times trying to get to him. Oh, and there was a Shih Tzu puppy too - easy to overlook among the others.
Anyway, Misty is booked in next Tuesday to have a very overgrown tooth removed. I'd hoped it wouldn't come to that, but despite his age his teeth are still growing. *sigh* George the vet did present me with a lovely bunch of homegrown carrot tops for Misty though, which was nice.
The rain held off until I was home and had the car put away, but it started up again while I was putting mum's mobility scooter back in the garage. I managed that and one of the bikes before the heavens opened, trapping me there. I figured I'd wait it out, but then along came the postman and left two parcels propped against the door of the house across the road. It's only shielded by a tiny porch overhang and the car was gone so I figured no one was home and the parcels, whatever they were, would be ruined in just a few minutes, so being the mad fool I am, I dived out in the rain, grabbed a big plastic bag from our porch and scampered across the road to wrap the parcels against the wet. Turned out the man of the house was in, but his wife had taken the keys so he couldn't open the door. I was wet by then anyway, so I passed the parcels through the window and dashed back across the road and into the garage again. There wasn't much point though, I was soaked to the skin already, so I got the other bike put away, pulled down the garage door, and got a deluge of water off it. I think most of it missed me, but I was so wet anyway it was hard to tell. I think I was laughing like a mad woman by that point, it was all so ridiculous.
I was so glad to get changed into dry clothes though. My jacket and jeans were drenched and the rain had even got inside my shoes and made my socks wet! Of course, mum had to wait until I'd changed to tell me we were out of milk, so I had to change back and go out in the rain again to the corner shop, in my wellies this time to save my feet from another soaking. What fun.
At least I'm dry now. Of course, now I'm home and indoors. it's stopped raining and the sun has come out. Typical! Maybe I can hang my wet clothes out and get them dry...

Date: 2013-07-23 01:35 pm (UTC)I came out of a local theater and had to make a dash for a taxi. I was soaked with just that short distance.
Being a weather forecaster is the only job where you can be wrong 100% of the time and not get fired.

Date: 2013-07-23 01:45 pm (UTC)The sun's gone in again and it's stifling outside again, too hot and humid to breathe, so I'm staying in with the windows shut to keep the worst of the heat out. Storms usually clear the air, but we've had several overnight and this morning and they've not helped at all.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed too. I really didn't want him having yet more surgery at his age, but there's no way around it, the tooth must come out before it starts causing serious problems. Poor Misty.
I am dry not, but very tired. Didn't sleep well last night, the thunder kept waking me up.

Date: 2013-07-23 01:51 pm (UTC)I'm only glad it was warm rain so I didn't mind too much, plus I had a rain hat on. My hair is the only thing that didn't get wet. At least I knew what the weather was like - it was impossible to miss since the storms had been raging the entire night.
I thought it was only in Britain that people needed to take an umbrella with them even on sunny days, just in case. Hope you were soon home and able to get dry, sitting in a car feeling all wet is horrible. I was lucky not to get drenched until I was home.

Yeah, I fed them before I left for the play.

Thank you, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. it'll be his second surgery this year and he had dental work done four times last year. It's a lot for an old rabbit but he's always had trouble with his teeth. i hope this will be the last time - he doesn't have many teeth left!

Date: 2013-07-23 08:06 pm (UTC)When I went to Florida for my vacation, it rained every day I was there. When I got back home, it was to rain...and it rained every day for a week and a half. It was nuts! So I kinda know what you're going through.
And of course the sun always comes out just after you got soaked, twice!

Date: 2013-07-23 08:58 pm (UTC)I think the weather sometimes does that on purpose, rain following people from place to place just for fun. Weather demons perhaps.
We had more rain again this afternoon, but it's still no cooler. You step outside and it's almost too hot to breathe. I think I'm actually glad it was pouring rain this morning, at least the air was breathable even if at times I felt like I was driving through a river.
Missed seeing you around, hope life is being kind to you!

Date: 2013-07-24 11:24 am (UTC)I really hope this is the last surgery for Misty too, he's been through so much, especially over the last year and I worry every time he has to have surgery,
I realised last night that it was the first time I've ever driven through water. Many times on family holidays I've been a passenger when dad's driven though a ford, but I've never done the driving myself. I was a bit worried on the way home because the water was deeper and made worse by the steeper angle of the road on that side, I didn't want to get stuck because of water flooding the engine, but I got through okay. Hope it's drained away by next Tuesday though. I can't take an alternate route because the other roads are closed due to tram construction work.

I'm staying in as much as possible, I don't handle the heat well at all. Hope you're mum can stay out of it too, mine doesn't step outside unless she really has to.

Date: 2013-07-24 07:42 pm (UTC)It can't be easy for him. Surgery is hard on everyone.
Driving through water isn't fun. I've never done it, just been a passenger, but Mum and I ended up in a flooded area last year when we were in Florida during a tropical storm. If I'd opened my door, the car would have flooded. I don't know how we made it through. It's really wicked scary.

Date: 2013-07-24 08:19 pm (UTC)Yeah, I've had more than enough surgery to last a lifetime, but I think Misty has now overtaken me, this will be either his eighth or ninth surgery. Poor old thing. He's a tough old bunny though, and in good health otherwise.

Date: 2013-07-25 04:23 am (UTC)Surgery is no fun for anyone. Sounds like he'll be able to pull through this one. Really, really hope it's the last one he has to go through.

Date: 2013-07-26 12:30 am (UTC)Wow, yeah, water in engines is not good. I think ours was sealed against it, given the part of the world we were in.

Date: 2013-07-26 10:58 am (UTC)I had visions of having to call my mechanic. "Um, Richard, I'm stuck in a big puddle and the engine's died, and I have my rabbit with me." Well, he already knows I'm nuts, I had to call him out once because I lost one of my battery connectors in the engine cavity of my previous car, and then had to drive to the garage when I caught my wing mirror on the gatepost and knocked it half off because I didn't have the strength in my hands to wrestle it back into position.

Date: 2013-07-26 03:12 pm (UTC)Interestingly, we had a massive thunderstorm at the same time, but we're five hours behind so it was late at night/early in the morning. It woke me up out of a sound sleep and it sounded like the thunder as coming from right on top of the house. And the rain was coming down in sheets. I love thunderstorms--have been known to go take walks in them on purpose--but even I was frightened. It went on so long it seemed like the world was ending. I wanted to call Torchwood because the storm definitely didn't seem like it was normal! Is there a Rift over Philadelphia, do you think?
Glad you (and Misty) are OK!

Date: 2013-07-26 06:15 pm (UTC)I love watching storms, but I prefer to do so from indoors - I'm not a huge fan of getting soaked as usually it makes me cold. Didn't mind so much this time because I was already home and could go straight indoors and change into try clothes I'd put out for when I got home. I was pretty sure I'd get wet so I prepared ahead of time. What I didn't expect was the flooded road, that was a bit scary. It was only a few metres but it was deep enough to make me worry about the engine of my little car getting swamped. I didn't want to be stranded in the middle! Never driven through water before, it was like driving through a river and it was worse coming back because the road from that direction dips down at a steeper angle so you're going nose down into water. The other way, the road mostly levels out before you reach the flooded bit.
Who knows? It's possible! Storms right overhead are definitely a bit freaky. we had a HUGE clap of thunder after I got home that came out of nowhere and sounded like an explosion right overhead. i didn't see any lighting, just heard this huge boom that seemed to echo forever. Didn't like that much.
Misty's okay, he's on painkillers once a day up until his op, then twice a day for a few days afterwards, but he'll probably be on the painkillers a lot of the time now because he has an artritic back, something that's common with old bunnies. I can sympathise.

Unless you got caught in the same storm we had earlier this evening... luckily I was in and dry, and the cats appeared shortly after it started raining and let me towel them dry too. Gordon is quite used to it, but the neighbour's cat, Tigger, made a bit more of a fuss!
