I think we all improve with practice and experience. It's the ideas that draw me in more than anything else. If an idea is good and put across well, that's the most crucial part of writing. Everything else comes from practice, but being able to convey an interesting, entertaining or amusing idea is where the real talent lies. That can't be faked, people either have it or they don't.
