Doctor Who Drabble: Picture This

Summary: The TARDIS is about to arrive on an alien world.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who, or the characters.





Picture the scene; an alien world, trees that bear no resemblance to those found on earth, grass that’s the wrong colour, orange, or pink, or turquoise. Maybe there’s more than one sun in the sky, or twin moons visible by day.


There might be a crystal city in the distance, or herds of peculiar ten-legged creatures gazing on the plains as strange scents fill the air.


Then a powerful wind gusts out of nowhere, a grinding sound stampedes the creatures, a blue box materialises, and people step out. For the Doctor and his companion, another adventure is about to begin.

I thought she was the technical expert of the team?

She is, but that doesn't mean she can't have a PhD, perhaps in mathematics, or physics, or something like that. She IS a genius, so she more than likely went to university and earned her doctorate at a younger age than most people.

I think Tosh was supposed to be in her early thirties, or at least late twenties originally, before RTD started mucking about with birth dates. She would have had plenty of time to earn a PhD, especially being the genius she is.

I assume Tosh was in her late twenties. John Barrowman said no one lives pass thirty on Torchwood. Well, almost nobody. You know what I'm saying?

JB toed the party line on that, but I prefer to thin Torchwood is not so careless. Yes, they get hurt and sometimes people get killed, but RTD just wanted everything to be doom and gloom for the sake of so called realism, plus he didn't want anyone but Gwen to survive, because that would prove she was so much better than everyone else. Actually, all it proved was that she was too much of a coward to put her own life on the line, she'd sacrifice the world to keep herself safe. The others would risk their lives to save others. Gwen wouldn't. *grumbles*

If Jack couldn't die permanently, then we would not have had John Barrowman on Torchwood for the rest of its run. RTD would have needed to make sure Jack never got "killed". A show with just Gwen in the lead? No thank you.

I get the feeling that if Jack hadn't been immortal - and someone else's creation - RTD would have killed him off as quickly as possible and put Gwen in charge of Torchwood, despite her knowing next to nothing. *rolls eyes*

Yeah, plus the BBC wanted an adult ensemble show with Captain Jack as the lead character because he was so popular. It was RTD who shoe-horned Gwen in and made her the lead character by killing everyone else off. And he wonders why the show died...

If Jack thought Gwen was acceptable, then the former Torchwood agents were pretty full on then. I vaguely remember the flashbacks.

Maybe if Eve Myles had tone it down a notch with the aggressive behaviour....

I just thought she should have been more mature or something else. All I saw was her flaws. She didn't appreciate what she had until it was taken away from her, momentarily.*refers to Rhys*

When she was being kind to others, I thought anyone else could have done that.

Plus, Gwen was only 'kind' to strangers, not to her teammates or boyfriend, and came across as patronising or condescending most of the time. She also acted more like a silly, giggly teenager than a grown woman. She didn't display any of the qualities a leader needs to have and most of the time she put what she wanted above the needs of everyone else.

Even when she got Rhys back, she immediately left him to sit beside Jack's body for days on end, not letting the others have time alone with him even though they'd all known him far longer than she had. So selfish.

She was selfish because RTD wrote her that way. Hence why the stories always revolved around her. There should have been scenes with the rest of the Torchwood team.

And a dumb idea, because as a character Gwen was much to weak to carry the show, just a shouty hypocrite with no sensitivity towards her boyfriend or the people she worked with.
